Showcasing Research Through Images
Your research could shape the new look of the DAVO website!
We are excited to invite all DAVO members to share the visual side of their research in our first Research Photo Competition. The ten winning photos will become banner images across the DAVO website – featured on pages such as Home, About Us, Working Groups, CAF, and DAVO Congress. In addition, the top five entries will each receive a €50 book voucher.
Research is not only written and argued; it is also observed, sensed, and encountered. This competition wants to celebrate moments of curiosity, discovery, and surprise, perhaps also frustration, that accompany our scholarly work. We invite submissions that capture the visual texture of research – from empirical work to archives, to collaborations and everyday academic life. We want to know: what does your research look like?
The Rules:
The competition is open to all members of DAVO (students and PhD researchers are particularly encouraged to submit). You can submit a single photograph, the photograph must be taken by yourself. Please include your full name in the file name (file name: your name_DAVO photo competition_2025) and send it to: secretariat@davo1.de.
In a separate document (filename: your name_photo description), please include a sentence or short paragraph (max 150 words) about your research and how this photo represents it. Please do not include photos of close ups on individual’s faces, such photos will be excluded from consideration.
Submission Deadline: 31st December 2025
How will the photos be judged?
All entries will be judged by an interdisciplinary panel on the following criteria:
- Composition
- Technical ability
- Originality
- Connection to research project
What happens with the winning photographs?
We are looking for outstanding images to feature on the new DAVO website.
- The top 10 photos will be featured on the website, each displayed alongside a short description of the related research project.
- The top 5 photos will additionally receive a €50 book voucher as a prize.
- Further photos will be acknowledged and promoted through DAVO emails and social media channels.
Entrants will retain copyright of the photographs. By entering the competition, you grant DAVO the right to publish the photos on the website, via email and on social media.
