The award recognises outstanding doctoral dissertations written in German or English in the field of contemporary research related to North Africa, the Near and Middle East, and West Asia. Eligible are dissertations submitted in 2025 by current DAVO members at their respective universities.
The prize is endowed with €3,000 and may be shared among multiple recipients.
Applications may be submitted either directly by candidates themselves or through nomination by university faculty members in the relevant field.
The following documents must be submitted as part of the application:
- A copy of the dissertation (PDF)
- A three-page summary of the work
- A CV in tabular form
- Two letters of evaluation: one from the primary supervisor (doctoral advisor) and one from another academic referee of the applicant’s choice
Complete application materials must be submitted as a single PDF by email to the DAVO Secretariat no later than 15 May 2026: secretariat@davo1.de.
The award will be decided by a selection committee composed of members of the DAVO board and academic council. If necessary, additional expert reviewers may be consulted.
The award ceremony will take place during the 32nd DAVO Congress, to be held from 10 to 12 September 2026 at LMU Munich.
