during the First Congress of Middle East Studies (WOCMES) we offer you a very interesting and diversified program of excursions in Mainz and some
of the most attractive areas of Germany. The tours must be reserved and paid for by 6 September 2002.
Some remaining places for excursions and tours will be available at the check in from Sunday 8 to Thursday 12.

Mayence et d'autres sites et régions intéressants en Allemagne. Les billets pour les excursions et les visites guidés doivent être réservés et payés au plus tard le 6 septembre 2002. Si, à ces dates, le nombre de participants requis pour une excursion n’est pas atteint elle sera annulée.

Founded as a Roman fort, Mainz has experienced repeated historical cycles of empires, wars, devastation and reconstruction. The city's appearance bears the mark of numerous
different stylistic epochs and philosophies of urban planning, with its most recent phase expressed in the post-modern corporate architecture of the southern old town.
Mainz,
therefore, serves as a typical model for city development in Central Europe. During our two hour tour through the inner city we will explore the traces of 2000 years of culture and
settlement history and will also cover major attractions such as the famous Chagall windows of St. Stephan's Church.

Mayence et la France ont un long passé en commun. Mayence fut, après la révolution française, capitale de la première République en Allemagne. Les troupes françaises entrèrent
dans la ville en 1798 et la ville fut pendant 16 ans française. En 1848, les conséquences de la révolution française se répercutèrent à Mayence. Ce sont également des urbanistes français
qui planifièrent après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale la reconstruction de Mayence, afin qu´elle soit "la ville la plus moderne d´Europe". Promenez-vous avec nous le long des chaussées
de Mayence en passant par l'ancienne grande rue Napoléon jusqu'au bâtiment dit "gouvernement".

Encore mille ans après sa construction, l´imposante cathédrale marque toujours la physionomie de la ville dont elle a, sans discontinuer, marqué l´histoire. Son exceptionnelle
collection de tombeaux nous rapelle en mémoire des personnalités illustres du Saint Empire romain germanique. En tant que lieu de couronnement de nombreux rois, la vénérable
cathédrale impériale était, au Moyen Age, le centre du pouvoir religieux et politique de l´Europe.

Built over 1,000 years ago, the impressive cathedral is the city's chief architectural emblem and has left its distinctive mark on the history and face of Mainz. During the Middle Ages
the venerable imperial cathedral was considered a center of Europe, which was emphasized by the cathedral providing the venue for the coronation of generations of monarchs.
Exploring the cathedral's unique collection of tomb stones the tour will take even a farther historical retrospective and bring back to life renowned individuals of the Holy Roman Empire.

Johannes Gutenberg, the most well-known son of the city of Mainz, had inaugurated an end to the dark Middle Ages with his ingenious invention of the printing press. Located in the
heart of the old city center the Gutenberg Museum stands as homage to the inventor of printing with moveable types. One of its prime exhibits is the world renowned forty two line bible
printed by Gutenberg himself. In the Museum's workshop, the tour will give a demonstration the way printing was done 500 years ago.

A night-time stroll through the center of town will focus on the numerous historical figures among the residents of Mainz. Mention will be made of some of those who made Mardi Gras
an important time for festivities here. Gutenberg as inventor of the printing press will take visitors by the hand and take the lead through the dusky lanes of the Old Town.
Famous authors and natives of Mainz describe the former Red Light District as well as the venerable Cathedral in all its glory. The tour will explore the charm of the Street Lanterns of
bygone epochs and will thrust the audience into scenes of action from the Middle Ages to the era of World War Two power black-outs. In diametric contrast to the historical part the
tour closes with a nightly scrutiny of the neo façade of today's Mainz and how this has influenced nightlife in the presence.

In the year 1922, the important Russian painter Alexej Jawlensky moved to Wiesbaden - a famous spa town of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. During the beginnings of
European Modern Art, Jawlensky emerged as one of the leading artists in the cultural environment of the "Blue Rider" (des "Blauen Reiters") in the early 1900s. His presence in
Wiesbaden highlights the spirit and lifestyle of the elegant spa town in the aftermath of World War I.
Starting from the Mainz Central Station, the program leads participants to the
first stop at the Wiesbaden Museum by public transport. From there a guided walk traces the painter's places and living areas in Wiesbaden. As a site of technical interest, the
Nerobergbahn dating from the 1880s will bring visitors up the hill to the last chapter of the story, which provides a look onto the traces and entrenched roots of Jawlensky's work at the
Russian "Greek Chapel" ("Griechische Kapelle"), with a concluding visit of the neighboring Russian Cemetery of the town.

A two day tour to one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, the Black Forest with its 'capital' Freiburg im Breisgau - a charming and typical university town. One afternoon will be spent in Baden-Baden - a famous spa, which used to be and still is a meeting point of the European upper-class. The tour includes two guided city walks in Freiburg and one in Baden-Baden as well as a half-day excursion to the most spectacular sites of the Black Forest. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Romanticism along the river Rhine the excursion invites to a tour along the tracks of famous writers and artists such as Lord Byron, Goethe
or William Turner. Boarding a riverboat, you will follow the Rhine down one of the most scenic and renowned shipping passages of Europe. Passing by castles, historical
wine-producing villages and the stunning scenery of the Rhine Valley you will reach the famous Rock of Lorelei, a central point and main focus of storytelling, poetry and artwork
since the epoch of Romanticism. There will be lunch in the scenic medieval town of Kaub. In the afternoon you will visit the core of Romanticism at Rüdesheim on the Rhine, including
the "Drosselgasse," renowned as the "World's Merriest Alleyway." From there the cable car will bring visitors up the Rüdesheim Hillside to the Germania Memorial, which presents a
dramatic view over the Rhine Valley.

Follow the footsteps of Mark Twain through the old town of Heidelberg with its narrow winding lanes. Let the flair of the oldest university town in Germany place you under its spell.
The lifestyle and milieu of the "Student Prince" is still alive and tactile, evinced by the student fraternities. Lunch will be provided at a typical pub, which has been serving students for
generations. From there the tour will go on to the former student prison. We will take the cog-wheeled train up the hill to the Castle, which is a part of the tour perfectly presenting the
sentiments of Romanticism. Here the tour will take a look at the largest wine barrel in the world, opportunity to enjoy the unique scenic view of the roof of the Old Town and the densely
forested Neckar valley.
